The Capital of Belize

Many people mistakenly think that the capital of Belize is Belize City. Actually, the capital of Belize is Belmopan, but it’s an understandable mistake as Belize City is the largest metropolitan area in the country and served as the capital for more than 150 years.

With a population of just 17,000 people, Belmopan, Belize is the smallest capital city in the entire Western Hemisphere. Belmopan is a planned city, and construction began in the late 1960s after Hurricane Hattie caused widespread devastation to Belize City. In 1970, the capital of the country was officially transferred to Belmopan, located far inland in Belize’s western Cayo District. Although Belmopan became the capital of Belize in 1970, it took many countries, including the United States, several decades to transfer their embassies.

Only a few people plan their Belize vacations around a trip to Belmopan, which is a pity because the city is completely unlike any other area in Belize. Belmopan has a large, spacious layout with several lovely parks and green spaces. Belmopan also has a Ring Road to help facilitate through traffic. In the center of the city lies the National Assembly Building, which elegantly combines western and ancient Maya influences. Indeed, the entrance to the building is a series of broad steps that resemble those of an ancient Maya temple.

All of the government departments and agencies are located in Belmopan along with a large diplomatic community. Much of the population of Belmopan is Maya who were drawn to the city because of the burgeoning job market and the wide selection of modern housing that is available.

Belmopan lies approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) and is served by two of the national highways. The George Price Highway (often known as the Western Highway) connects Belize City to Belmopan and onto the border with Guatemala while the Hummingbird Highway connects Belmopan to the coastal city of Dangriga in the country’s southeast.

Belmopan is well-designed to withstand seasonal storms and is situated some 250 feet (75 meters) above sea level. Belmopan is just a short drive from the Mountain Pine Forest Reserve, home to Central America’s tallest waterfalls. Belmopan is also home to a community center, a large library, and the George Price Centre for Peace and Development, named for the country’s first prime minister.
