September in Belize

Although every month is a great time to visit the country, Belize in September is truly something special. Often nicknamed the “Patriotic Month,” September is when several national festivals are held, giving the entire month a very festive and patriotic feeling.

September celebrations in Belize kick off on September 10 with the national holiday known as The Battle of St. George’s Caye Day. Although that’s quite a mouthful, the holiday marks one of the key points in Belize’s history. Way back in 1798, a plucky band of English loggers and a small British flotilla scored a surprise victory over the Spanish fleet just offshore of the island of St. George’s Caye. As a result of that key battle, Belize became a British colony and is now the only country in Central America where English is the official language.

The Battle of St. George’s Caye Day is celebrated by dancing in the street, the recitation of patriotic poetry, playing patriotic music, and everyone and everything decked out in the national colors (red, white, and blue). Many towns and villages, however, begin celebrating as early as August 28, and the festivities continue all the way through until September 21.

All of the patriotic fervor and excitement caps off on September 21, which is Independence Day in Belize. On September 21, 1981, Belize formally gained its independence from Great Britain. Every town and village celebrates with parades, more street dancing, singing, flag waving, live music concerts, and, of course, lots and lots of fireworks.

Many Belizeans who work abroad return home during September to celebrate Independence Day in Belize with their friends and families. September is a great time to see and participate in all the fun because everyone is in a festive mood. Other September celebrations in 2018 include local fairs and exhibitions.

With all the patriotic excitement and fun, September is a great chance to see Belize like a local. September is traditionally part of the “low” tourist season as many visitors from North America are returning to college or work in September. That makes September a fabulous time to visit if you want to escape overcrowding at popular destinations.

If you’d like to join in on all the fun in September, be sure to book your stay at the Belize Boutique Resort and Spa. Located on a gorgeous, 1,000-acre property thirty miles north of the Belize international airport, the resort is an enclave of comfort and luxury.
