Richard Branson, one of the world's richest and most famous business entrepreneurs, has just announced that he will be taking his personal submarine to Belize in order to investigate the mysteries of the Blue Hole.
The Great Blue Hole, sometimes known as the Belize Blue Hole, is a natural phenomenon found in the northern part of the Belize Reef that can be seen from outer space. Sheltered by Lighthouse Reef, the waters of the Blue Hole cover a vast cave structure that was formed millions of years ago. Its gothic atmosphere and unique formation have made it one of the most popular dive spots on the entire Belize Reef.
Richard Branson, age 68, told Forbes Magazine that he will be teaming up with Fabien Cousteau, the grandson of Jacques Cousteau, the man who first publicized the existence of the Great Blue Hole to the world in 1971, as well as the Roatan Institute of Deep Sea Exploration (RIDE) in order to explore the Great Blue Hole by submersible underwater vehicle. Branson and his colleagues plan to use submersible vehicles made by Canadian submarine makers Aquatica with Aquatica CEO Harvey Flemming at the helm of one of his company's latest generation Stingray 500 subs.
No date has been set for the submarine expedition, but Branson told Forbes that he will be onboard the submarine when it dives to the bottom of the Belize Blue Hole "in the coming months" before the end of 2018. The Aquatica team's plans also include broadcasting a live stream video feed from the submarine during its descent. Aquatica has described the mission as being equally about entertainment as well as marine conservation and scientific research. Currently, Aquatica plans to send two submarines to explore the Belize Blue Hole, one with Branson onboard.
